TMJ Dysfunction Massage

Specialist massage targeting the jaw, neck and surrounding muscles to relieve TMJ pain, teeth grinding (bruxism) and tension headaches.

What is TMJ Dysfunction?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge joint that connects your jaw to your skull. TMJ dysfunction (also called TMD — temporomandibular disorder) occurs when the joint and surrounding muscles become inflamed, strained or misaligned, causing pain and restricted movement.

TMJ dysfunction is surprisingly common and can significantly affect quality of life. It is often linked to stress, teeth grinding (bruxism), poor posture, dental work or injury to the jaw.

Symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction

  • Jaw pain or soreness, especially in the morning
  • Clicking, popping or grinding sounds when opening/closing the jaw
  • Difficulty or discomfort when chewing or yawning
  • Locking of the jaw (open or closed position)
  • Headaches and migraines — often felt at the temples
  • Ear pain, tinnitus or a feeling of fullness in the ears
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Facial pain

How Can Massage Help TMJ Dysfunction?

TMJ massage focuses on releasing tension in the muscles of mastication (chewing muscles) — particularly the masseter, temporalis, pterygoids and surrounding neck muscles. By relieving muscular tension and improving blood flow to the joint area, massage can significantly reduce pain and restore normal jaw movement.

At The Bodywise Clinic, our TMJ massage therapists are specifically trained in intraoral and extraoral techniques. Sessions may include massage of the face, jaw, neck, shoulders and upper back, as all of these areas are interconnected and often contribute to TMJ symptoms.

What to Expect

Your therapist will begin with a consultation to understand your symptoms and medical history. The treatment includes external massage of the jaw, temples, neck and shoulders, and may include gentle intraoral (inside the mouth) work if appropriate and consented to. The session is tailored to your specific pattern of dysfunction.

Note: TMJ massage should be used as part of a comprehensive approach to managing TMJ dysfunction. We recommend discussing your symptoms with your dentist or GP in conjunction with massage therapy.
