Dry Needling

A precise, evidence-based technique using fine needles to deactivate trigger points, relieve pain and restore muscle function.

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a modern, evidence-based therapeutic technique used to treat musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. It involves inserting thin, solid filament needles (the same as acupuncture needles) directly into trigger points — tight, hyper-irritable spots within muscle tissue that are a common source of localised and referred pain.

The term "dry" refers to the fact that no medication or solution is injected — the needle itself is the therapeutic tool. When inserted into a trigger point, the needle causes a local twitch response in the muscle, which helps release the knot and normalise the electrical activity of the muscle fibres.

What Can Dry Needling Treat?

  • Chronic and acute back and neck pain
  • Shoulder pain and rotator cuff dysfunction
  • Tennis and golfer's elbow
  • Headaches and migraines originating from trigger points
  • Hip and gluteal pain
  • Knee pain and IT band syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sports injuries and repetitive strain

Dry Needling vs. Acupuncture

While both dry needling and acupuncture use the same type of thin filament needle, they are based on different principles and target different things. Dry needling is rooted in Western anatomy and physiology, targeting specific trigger points in muscles identified through clinical assessment. Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice based on energy meridians (qi). Both can be effective, and the approaches are sometimes complementary.

What to Expect

Your therapist will assess your posture, range of motion and identify specific trigger points before treatment. Needles are inserted and may be briefly manipulated. You may feel a local twitch response — a brief, involuntary muscle contraction — which is a positive sign that the trigger point has been engaged. Some mild soreness for 24–48 hours after treatment is normal. Most clients report significant pain relief after one to three sessions.

Note: Dry needling is performed by specifically trained therapists. Please inform us of any blood thinning medication, fear of needles, or recent surgery when booking.
