What is Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage is a highly effective therapeutic technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. Unlike a standard relaxation massage, deep tissue work applies sustained pressure and slow, deliberate strokes to target areas of chronic tension, muscle knots (trigger points) and adhesions in the muscle fibres and fascia.
At The Bodywise Clinic, our highly trained therapists use deep tissue massage to address the root cause of pain rather than just the symptoms. Whether you're dealing with a long-standing injury, postural problems from desk work, or simply chronic tightness, deep tissue massage can provide lasting relief.
What Can Deep Tissue Massage Help With?
- Chronic back, neck and shoulder pain
- Postural problems and muscle imbalances
- Muscle knots (trigger points) and tension
- Sports injuries and rehabilitation
- Repetitive strain injury (RSI)
- Sciatica and referred pain
- Stress and general fatigue
- Limited range of motion
What to Expect During Your Session
Your session begins with a brief consultation where your therapist will ask about your health history, current concerns and treatment goals. This ensures your session is completely tailored to your specific needs.
During the massage, your therapist will use slow, firm strokes and direct pressure to work through the superficial muscle layers before targeting the deeper tissues. You may feel some discomfort as knots and adhesions are worked on — this is normal and temporary. The sensation is often described as a "good pain" — pressure that is intense but therapeutic.
After your session, it's normal to feel some soreness for 24–48 hours, similar to the feeling after a good workout. Drinking plenty of water is recommended to help flush toxins released during the massage.
Who is Deep Tissue Massage Suitable For?
Deep tissue massage is suitable for most adults, particularly those dealing with chronic pain or musculoskeletal issues. It is commonly recommended for:
- Office workers suffering from postural tension
- Athletes and active individuals
- Anyone recovering from a soft-tissue injury
- People with chronic lower back pain
